Caterpillar is the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer. The Caterpillar Tractor Co. – or ‘Cat’ – was formed in 1925 following the merger of the Holt Manufacturing Company and C.L. Best Tractor Co. It was Benjamin Holt who first patented a continuous track in 1907, bolting wooden slats to a chain on an agricultural tractor. Legend has it that an employee remarked that the movement of the tracks looked like a caterpillar, hence the start of the iconic brand name. You can recognise Caterpillar Machinery by its ‘Cat yellow’ paint & ‘Cat’ logo.
Caterpillar is famous for their crawler tractors, or ‘Dozers’, and these were first used in large numbers in WWI as gun-tractors. In WWII, Cat machines were manufactured in huge volumes. Their use became closely associated with the Construction Battalions, or ‘Seabees’ in the Pacific, and airfield construction in Europe. Cat Dozers could also be seen playing their part clearing beaches in the Normandy landings.
Over the years, Caterpillar has developed a comprehensive range of machinery, including:
- Articulated dump trucks
- Backhoe loaders
- Hydraulic excavators
- Mining trucks
- Motor graders
- Track loaders
- Wheel loaders
